Protecting Your Investment: How to Keep Your New Floors Looking Like Day One

Investing in new flooring from Tuff Flooring is one of the most effective ways to increase your home’s value and daily enjoyment. However, the longevity of that investment depends on what happens after our installers leave. Whether you’ve chosen the rugged durability of laminate or the natural elegance of hardwood, a few simple habits will keep your floors looking pristine for decades.

The “Grit” Factor

In Idaho, we deal with a lot of dust, sand, and seasonal salt. These small particles act like sandpaper under your shoes, slowly dulling the finish of your floors. The most effective defense is a high-quality walk-off mat at every entrance. We also recommend a “no shoes” policy indoors to prevent outdoor contaminants from reaching your new hardwood or laminate.

Moisture and Humidity Control

As we’ve discussed with hardwood, humidity is the “silent mover” of wood products. Using a humidifier during our dry Boise winters can prevent your wood floors from shrinking. When it comes to cleaning, “less is more.” Avoid using steam mops on hardwood or laminate, as the forced moisture can penetrate the seams. Instead, use a damp (not dripping) microfiber mop and a manufacturer-approved cleaner that doesn’t leave a waxy residue.

Furniture and Sunlight

Large windows are a staple of Idaho architecture, but UV rays can cause wood to change color over time. Using area rugs (especially our custom-bound options!) and window treatments can help even out the exposure. Additionally, always use high-quality felt pads under furniture legs. Avoid plastic or rubber casters, which can scratch or discolor certain finishes.

At Tuff Flooring, our relationship with you doesn’t end when the installation is finished. We want you to love your floors for as long as you live in your home.
